The university gets cycling
We’re cycling! Together. For the climate. For us.
On Thursday, 28 April we start our university cycling challenge. Join us! You’ll be making a positive contribution to the climate and you’ll improve your fitness!
On this page you can stay informed about all activities and challenges of “Die Uni radelt”!

What is “The university gets cycling”?
This summer, we – university staff and students – would like to swap as many car kilometres as possible for bicycle kilometres. That’s why the University of Klagenfurt is taking part in the “Kärnten radelt” (Carinthia gets cycling) initiative.
Why should you switch your car for your bike more often?
- You reduce your carbon footprint with every kilometre you commute by bike.
- You look after your health and you keep in shape.
- You save money as you don’t have to fill the tank so often.
- You double the positive climate effect, because we reward cycled university kilometres by planting trees.
Who can join in?
Anyone can take part in the overall campaign! E-bike riders, mountain bikers, recreational cyclists. This campaign is not about achieving peak athletic performances. The challenges are open to students and university staff.
How does it work?
Collect kilometres for the climate. It’s really easy!
Please enter your details online at https://kaernten.radelt.at/. If you additionally register your university affiliation at https://kaernten.radelt.at/dashboard/challenges then the cycled kilometres you accumulate will be attributed to the university.

To help us analyse your entries, please pay attention to the following points:
- If you are recording a commute, please make sure to include the word “pendeln” in your entry (➝ automatic text search).
- Please do not combine commutes – the analysis of distance and number of trips refers to single trips (trips there and back are counted separately).
- If you commute by train or if your commute is divided into two parts by any other means of transport, please add up the morning and evening legs of your commute and record these.
Example: From Villach to the university by train: One entry (in the morning as in the evening) consists of the sum of the distance from the residence to the railway station in Villach and the distance from Klagenfurt West station to the university (0.5 km). - A business trip does not qualify as a commute. A commute is your morning commute to university and your evening commute home. A business trip is a trip undertaken in the course of your duties during working hours. Please bear this difference in mind when entering your data.
- If you have entered your June trips in a way that is different from what is stated above, it would help us in our evaluation if you could correct your entries. Thanks!
Challenges and actions
You can find out about the individual challenges via this website and through our social media channels. When logging your kilometres, please make sure that you enter each journey (from home to university or from university to home) separately and tag it with the label “PENDELN” (commuting) in the comment field and don’t forget to enter the accumulated metres of altitude for each journey.
Stay tuned!

What’s in it for you?
You can do something for yourself and the climate. Not enough? You can win attractive prizes as well.
We can already announce one of the prizes:
- Voucher for a swiss stone pine hike with a biosphere park ranger through the rustic pine forest in the Nockberge biosphere park (provided by the Nockberge biosphere park)
Double the good!
We will plant trees for the bike kilometres collected by university members – one tree per 1,000 km cycled. This gives your efforts an additional positive boost! Will we manage to cycle the equivalent of circling the equator?
