The Introductory and Orientation Period for students starting a Bachelor’s/teacher training programme, or recommencing a programme after taking a break from study, has been subject to new regulations since the winter semester of 2011. This regulation does not apply to Bachelor’s programmes in Psychology or Media and Communications Science.
The Introductory and Orientation Period aims to give you an overview of the content and structure of your programme of study.
Before starting your programme of study, you must successfully complete the Introductory and Orientation Period (STEOP). Successful completion of the STEOP entitles you to take other lectures, seminars and examinations related to the programme.
The STEOP consists of one or more lectures, seminars or workshops, all of which are specified in the relevant curriculum (syllabus). You can find out more information about your STEOP under Programme structure on your programme of study page.
How can I view my STEOP status?
If the new STEOP regulation applies to your programme of study, your current STEOP status will be displayed in your online student profile.
If you still haven’t successfully completed the STEOP for your programme, your status will read “STEOP still to be completed”. After completing the STEOP, your status will change to “STEOP completed”.
What rights do I have if I have not yet successfully completed the STEOP?
If you have not yet successfully completed your STEOP in its entirety, you will not be able to register for examinations relating to lectures that are not a part of your STEOP. If you fulfill the registration criteria given in the examination regulations for the desired course, however, you may register for an introductory seminar, course or lecture that does not form part of your STEOP and which has an examination. If you complete one of these introductory seminars or lectures before successfully completing your STEOP, the result awarded (mark) can be recorded. This result will only become valid from the date you successfully complete your STEOP.
We always strongly advise students to complete their STEOP courses first so that they encounter no delays when continuing on to their desired programme of study.
How often can I take an examination for a STEOP lecture or seminar course?
It is only possible to resit STEOP examinations twice (as of 01.01.2016 you have three opportunities to resit STEOP examinations). If a STEOP examination is not passed at the last possible resit (= third attempt / from 01.01.2016 fourth attempt), you can no longer be admitted to your desired programme of study (restricted from entering the programme of study). This only applies to programmes within AAU. You may still be considered for the same programme of study at another university in Austria.
A change to legal regulations means that the earliest point at which a student can be reconsidered for admission to the same programme of study at Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt is the third semester after their admission was annulled. Students can reapply for admission twice in total.
What do I have to do if I have successfully completed my STEOP?
If you have successfully passed all examinations required for your STEOP, your STEOP status will be set automatically to “STEOP completed”. You can view this status on your online student profile. You can then register for all lecture and seminar courses and examinations connected to your desired programme of study, provided that you fulfil the registration criteria given in the course curriculum.
If your STEOP includes examinations from another programme of study which have been recognised by AAU and if your STEOP status is not automatically updated, please contact the Admissions Office (studienabteilung [at] aau.at).
If an electronic examination book is available for your desired programme of study, an Examination recognition application form should be submitted via the examination book. If not, the form should be submitted in hard copy.
Are any programmes/students exempt from the STEOP regulation?
The STEOP regulation does not apply to Bachelor’s programmes in Psychology and Media and Communications Science. These programmes have their own special admissions processes.
Incoming students on mobility programmes are also exempt from the STEOP for their desired programme of study.
Students who have already completed the first examination on a diploma degree, and who want to change to a Bachelor’s programme in the same subject, are also exempt. (For example: If you have already passed “Applied Business Administration” (L 158) during the first phase of your study programme and now want to change to the Bachelor’s programme in “Applied Business Administration” (L 033 518), the STEOP for the Bachelor’s in “Applied Business Administration” is considered complete).
If one of these circumstances applies to you and your STEOP status is not changed automatically to “STEOP completed”, please contact the Admissions Office (studienabteilung [at] aau.at).
Where can I read the legal regulations concerning the STEOP?
