Emotions in Environmental and Sustainability Education Research Group
In light of the accelerating crisis of unsustainability, people face losing a safe operating space for humans and non-humans alike. Educators and learners increasingly express feelings of anxiety and grief around these existential questions. Until now, educational research has retained an overall cognitive focus, which does not yet adequately address these emotions, nor foster emotions which can empower people to contribute toward a more sustainable future. Given a lack of networks on emotions in Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESE) and a need for collaborative efforts, an informal network was founded at ECER 2023 in Glasgow. The 18 emerging and senior researchers in our network come from different epistemologies and methodologies and want to develop joint research for educators and other researchers, as well as generate a space for emotions-sensitive practices in academia. Our aim is to build up knowledge regarding the pedagogical and didactical implications of approaching emotions in ESE.
