The AAU´s mission is to support incoming exchange students to the fullest, ensuring the best academic and learning environment, as well as social and leisure aspects of their exchange. The International Office organises every semester a special Orientation Week, during which incoming students are invited to participate in a guided tour through the AAU’s university campus & library, a historical & practical city tour, an introduction to the AAU’s course management system moodle. Upon arrival, the International Office guides exchange students through the relevant administrative processes such as application, admission and course registration and provides necessary information regarding residence in Austria.
Incoming students can rely on the OeAD Housing office when it comes to looking for suitable accommodation. The OeAD Housing Office offers a range of room types in student dorms at different price points, as well as selected private apartments. Students receive assistance in every step of the process, from gathering information to finally moving in and, of course, during their stay.
The AAU wants to provide the best opportunities to acquire German language skills, as a result incoming exchange students can benefit from scholarships for a 3-weeks intensive German course and a German semester course.
A section of the local student union, the ESN Entrée Team, organises events and activities to encourage contact between local and international students. Austria’s most modern University Sports Institute is located on the AAU campus. Around 160 different sports classes are offered every semester, the campus also features tennis courts and beach volleyball courts. The USI also runs seasonal sports camps for sports including kitesurfing, climbing and ski tours.
The International Office continuously evaluates its services and collects incoming students’ feedback at the end of each semester via an online survey. On average 90% of the incoming students rate their exchange period in Klagenfurt and the support of the International office as excellent or good. External evaluations, e.g. by the European Commission, also demonstrate a high degree of student satisfaction: According to the 2015 Erasmus+ Mobility Tool Survey, 97% of the incoming students were very satisfied or satisfied with their stay at the AAU. Furthermore, the AAU was awarded a Certificate for International Student Satisfaction in 2014 by the StudyPortals website based on students’ reviews.
