Bibliometrics
What does bibliometrics mean?
Bibliometrics is a “system of indicators that quantifies [written scientific] output on the one hand and records its perception on the other. This is done by counting references and citations to literature that has been cited or used in other ways.” (Ball, Rafael: Bibliometrie: einfach, verständlich, nachvollziehbar, Berlin, De Gruyter Saur 2014, S.3)
Bibliometrics uses mathematical and statistical methods to quantitatively measure scientific publications and their reception. Bibliometrics cannot offer a qualitative analysis of scientific output.
What can bibliometrics achieve?
The areas of application for bibliometrics are numerous, which is why it is also of interest to various players in the scientific community. Without claiming to be exhaustive, here are just a few examples:
- Development of a publication strategy to increase the visibility of research results (interest group: scientists)
- Strategic decision support regarding licensing of journals or databases (interest group: library)
- Analysis of scientific output at the micro (scientists), meso (institute, faculty, university), and macro (country, world) levels (interest groups: scientists, research services, university management, funding agencies, ministries, ranking agencies)
Which databases may be used for bibliometric analyses?
There are various databases that can be used for bibliometric analyses. The best known are Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics) and Scopus (Elsevier). Both databases are licensed by the University Library and are accessible to library users. Other free databases include OpenAlex (OurResearch) and Google Scholar.
