Global Mediatization Research and Technology

At the same time, as all levels of culture and society are shaped by new technological advancements online that lead to new forms of mediatization, the ways and contexts in which digital media are integrated into communicative structures are becoming more diversified and – at the same time – globalized. Likewise, mediatization is directly linked to modernity as new technologies permeate everyday life at the personal, social and global level. Global flows of information are regarded as a fundamental driving force and an integral part of everyday life. Rapid developments in media technologies engender global mediatization processes within overlapping micro, meso and macro levels.In this context, mediatization research has evolved into a highly beneficial meta-perspective of communication and media science. The challenge that mediatization research nowadays faces is grasping the rapidly developing digital communication and integrate this into mediatization research, at the same time taking the shift of cultural boundaries in comparative studies into account. VeranstaltungsortI.2.01Veranstalter Institut für MathematikBeschreibungThe eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of a graph contain a lot --- but not always all --- information on the structure of the graph. In this talk, we will dive deeper into graphs that have a lot of combinatorial symmetry: distance-regular graphs (such as Hamming graphs and Johnson graphs). We will give an overview of when distance-regularity is determined by the eigenvalues (and when it is not). We will see how systems of orthogonal polynomials can help to recognize distance-regular graphs from their eigenvalues and a little extra information through the `spectral excess theorem'. We then discuss how these methods and ideas led to the construction of the twisted Grassmann graphs, a family of distance-regular graphs that have the same spectrum as certain Grassmann graphs. These twisted graphs are currently the only known family of distance-regular graphs with unbounded diameter that are not vertex-transitive. If time permits, we also present some other results, such as a characterization of the generalized odd graphs ('the odd-girth theorem'), and discuss some results on graphs that are `almost distance-regular', in particular how the latter can be used to construct non-isomorphic graphs with the same eigenvalues.Vortragende(r)Edwin van DamKontaktSenka Haznadar (senka.omerhodzic@aau.at)

TEWI-Kolloquium: The process of new venture creation – towards the booming ICT start-ups

VeranstaltungsortK.0.01Veranstalter Fakultät für Technische WissenschaftenBeschreibungEstonia has enjoyed success stories in ICT implementation in a broad field of public and private sectors for last 15-20 years. The key event for that development was the launching of the Tiger Leap program in Estonian schools, 1996. The program fully equipped schools with computers and Internet access and other ICT services. Computer science classes were provided in 84% of schools in the following eight years. Since 2014 World Economic Forum considered Estonia among innovation-driven knowledge-based societies, and some years later – being hidden entrepreneurship champion in Europe. Besides, Estonia has become one of the developed start-up ecosystems where young ICT companies are booming. These events mentioned above refer to the successful combination of educational and entrepreneurial ecosystems in Estonia. The presentation aims to disclose the role of ICT start-ups as the engine of the innovation-driven development in a small society. Case studies analyse the entrepreneurial process and journey of ICT start-ups suggesting dynamic stage model approach. This approach discloses complexity of the entrepreneurial journey from opportunity recognition to venture launch. Findings of studies show growing importance of digital technology, ICT start-ups and the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the welfare of Estonian citizens.
