The Info Days of the Austrian Students’ Union (ÖH) at the University of Klagenfurt/Celovec, the lobby group in university politics for all students at our university, will support you on 29 and 30 January 2025 before the start of the semester with advice on all aspects of studying.
In her Master’s thesis, mathematician Celina Strasser sought to solve the longest path problem using reinforcement learning, a method drawn from the field of Artificial Intelligence. Her work was honoured with the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research Award in 2024.
Alessandro Fornasier’s work involves helping robots and drones to navigate the world. As part of his PhD project, he used the theory of ‘equivariant systems’ to develop localisation algorithms that are more robust and accurate. In recognition of his research in the Control of Networked Systems working group, he has now been honoured with the ‘Award of Excellence’ presented by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research.
Kseniia Harshina (Department of Information Technology) is developing a virtual reality game that explores issues of forced migration and flight. The project is part of the Ada Lovelace Programme, which supports young researchers who are conducting interdisciplinary research in the context of “Humans in the Digital Age”.
To explore new terrain and perform tasks autonomously, be it in the air, on the ground or under water, robotic vehicles need to know where they are and what their surroundings are like. As part of his research for his doctorate, Christian Brommer, a member of the research group ‘Control of Networked Systems’ at the University of Klagenfurt, has developed a modular and robust framework model that is designed to maximise the autonomy of robotic vehicles exploring unknown terrain.
The Test of Time Award recognises publications that were published 10 years ago and have had a lasting and substantial impact on research in a particular specialist field. As part of the ICLP (International Conference on Logic Programming) in mid-October in Dallas/Texas, Martin Gebser (Department of Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity) was honoured for a paper that he published with co-authors in 2014.

Explore and map an area, detect objects and find people in need and then provide them with first aid kits: These are the challenges involved in three competitions in the SAPIENCE project. Four research teams from four universities compete against each other in the competitions to learn from each other. At the first competition, which took place in London at the end of August, the Klagenfurt team was the only team to complete every task without an accident. What makes this special: The team, coordinated by doctoral student Luca Di Pierno, consisted exclusively of Bachelor’s students from the University of Klagenfurt’s Robotics & Artificial Intelligence programme, in addition to Luca and a Master’s graduate.
Udo Schilcher, Senior Researcher at the Institute of Networked and Embedded Systems, recently completed his post-doctoral university teaching qualification (habilitation) in Information and Communications Engineering. His research centres on improving communication between individual devices without connecting them via cables. There are potential applications in all wireless networks, from mobile phone networks to sensor networks in industrial plants and robot swarms.
At the Christian Doppler Laboratory ATHENA, 12 researchers are currently working on innovative technologies to ensure that video transmission is smooth and energy-efficient even though the data volumes are high. Among them is Daniele Lorenzi, who is set to complete his doctoral thesis this winter semester.
