From this autumn, mathematician Verena Schwarz will conduct research at the University of Oxford for three years as holder of the renowned Glasstone Research Fellowship. A new Christian Doppler Laboratory (CD Laboratory) is being established at the University of Klagenfurt. ‘AIMStream’ will focus on the next generation of video streaming – from enhanced user experiences and resilient, globally scalable transmission to immersive 3D content. The funding proposal was recently approved. The laboratory, which is set to run for seven years, will be headed by Farzad Tashtarian, a senior researcher and lecturer at the University of Klagenfurt’s Department of Information Technology.
Strengthening resilience against shocks and crises is a key strategic goal for Europe. Technological sovereignty and a reliable energy supply are decisive factors in withstanding geopolitical tensions and economic pressures, thereby securing freedom, competitiveness, and sustainability for the people of Europe. By funding the competence centre ‘Autonomic Resilience in Dynamic Networked Systems’ (ARC for short), the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) is laying the foundation for a leading centre for collaborative research and the innovation of resilient systems. Because COMET centres are designed to run for eight years, this opens up the prospect for the long-term development of excellence and sustainable innovation. This initiative will create 30 highly skilled jobs at Lakeside Labs and the University of Klagenfurt. The largest partner is the University of Klagenfurt, which co-owns Lakeside Labs alongside BABEG.
Researchers at the University of Klagenfurt have achieved a major breakthrough in automated problem-solving with “CheckMate”. This new AI-driven technology independently develops algorithms for complex combinatorial and optimisation problems – such as those encountered in the optimal planning of industrial plants and production processes – delivering significantly better results than existing methods for “hard problems” in industrial practice. A patent has already been filed for the invention, which represents a major step forward towards the “holy grail of problem-solving”.
BrokenArm, a student team led by Nadezhda Varzonova, will compete in the Robotic Grasping and Manipulation Competition at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) from 2 to 4 June 2026. The Klagenfurt team enters the competition as one of the favourites after achieving the highest overall score in the qualification round.
