Our focus in research and teaching activities is on the modeling and design of user-oriented applications. We conduct both fundamental research as well as experimental and applied research with an emphasis on the areas of modeling, computational linguistics and semantic web, which are further complemented by projects in the area of e-learning.
We focus on human-centered informatics and our research activities address topical issues in this area. Our current areas of interrest include Ambient Assisted Living with the project Human Behavior Monitoring and Support (HBMS) as well as Mobile Application Modeling and Development.
To model is innate in humans, as it helps us to better understand segments of our complex reality. Models and their (formal) linguistic representations are the central tool for communication, for the reflection of experiences, for decision-making, for the formation of opinion and for strategic planning. Ultimately, every informatics system is a model. The study of modeling deals with the development of modeling languages and tools for these modeling purposes and for a variety of target groups, such as those with different backgrounds in training and education. We have developed several approaches to determine the relationship between descriptions in natural language and more formal (model) descriptions of informatics. The centerpiece here is the Klagenfurt Conceptual Predesign Model KCPM, which serves as Interlingua for transformations in both directions.
Across the globe, vast quantities of information are produced on a daily basis, usually taking an unstructured, merely textual form. For us humans, “understanding” these texts generally poses no difficulties. However, the same can not be said for computers. Computational linguistics develop methods and software, which allow computers to “understand” texts (natural language) and thus to process these.

Both projects tackle the extraction of relevant information from natural language texts. There are several other projects in development, proving that linguistic methods are constantly gaining relevance in many fields.
Ambient Assisted Living – AAL
The purpose of AAL research is to enable the elderly to live as autonomously as possible in their domestic environment for as long as possible, with the aid of IT methods. We use our approaches and our skills in modeling and computational linguistics in order to derive individual cognitive behavioral models from the specific behavioral processes of a particular person. These are subsequently further processed on an interdisciplinary basis, using methods from artificial intelligence and findings from the field of cognitive psychology. Knowledge “learned” in this way can be recalled at a later date, thus compensating for gaps in the episodic memory of the respective person and supporting them in their activities. As a consequence, persons that find themselves in need of assistance to an increasing degree, are supported by their own previous knowledge rather than by that of third parties.
Modern Learning & E-Learning
Due to processes of demographic change and the associated transformations taking place in the world of work, lifelong learning has become a topic of significant relevance for the future of society and sciences. In this context, e-learning today represents a key component for the support of learning and teaching. We therefore also apply our modeling expertise to the description of learning and teaching content. The main focus here is on the modular development of learning objects, their administration and their reutilization.
Going beyond this, we are also involved in various projects, where we work on the development of applications that are of an “edutainment” nature, playfully motivating students to learn. The practical applicability of these learner-centered scenarios is tested in cooperation with schools.
Computational Linguistics Project LCA (Linguistic Corpus Analysis)
Projekt LCA ist ein gemeinsames Projekt der Foschungsgruppe Application Engineering und der Firma econob. Ziel des Projekts ist es, große Corpora zu annotieren und das darin enthaltene Wissen mit Methoden der Computerlinguistik aufzubereiten. Im Rahmen des Projekts entstehen Online-Lexika mit Millionen von Einträgen, durch die Computer in die Lage versetzt werden, die Bedeutung von Texten zu "verstehen". Auf der Basis der systemisch zusammengestellten Corpora und Analysen entstehen neue intelligente Technologien, die für Trendanalysen u.a. in der Finanzbranche eingesetzt werden.
The aim of the project HBMS is to preserve the individual memory of a person by building a cognitive model of her/his behavior. Behavioral sequences of the persons’ Universe of Discourse are elicitated, mapped to and integrated into a cognitive model (HCM, Human Cognitive Model). If the individual needs support for an action, HBMS can return information about missing steps out of his/her former knowledge. HBMS is funded by the Klaus Tschira Stiftung GmbH.

DUET involved three regional Universities from the European Periphery-the Univ. of Wales in Bangor,the Univ. of Joensuu(Karelia, Finland)and the Univ. of Klagenfurt(Carinthia, Austria).Within such regions the University constitutes the main, and often,the only institution undertaking R&D.
