Prospective students can choose from seven thematic doctoral programmes. The primary goal of these doctoral programmes is the ongoing advancement of research, teaching and qualification in the sphere of doctoral studies. Thematic doctoral programmes allow for the structured thematic supervision of participating doctoral students as well as supporting the development of their internationally competitive academic careers.
The programmes are shaped by teams of academics (faculty and doctoral students) coming together to form broad research communities, in order to jointly push forward the research in a specific thematic field – if desired, teams can combine members from different faculties and may work in cooperation with other universities. Thus, the thematic doctoral programmes are expected to sharpen the definition of the AAU research profile and reinforce key research focus areas.
The Universität Klagenfurt Young Scientists Mentoring Programme combines external one-to-one mentoring with career coaching.
The seventh round of the Young Scientists Mentoring Programme started in winter semester 2022/23 comprising a total of 7 mentees with mentors from Belgium, Great Britain, Italay, and Canada.
Brought about by the considerable individual enthusiasm and the excellent national and international networks of the mentees and their supervisors, four exciting and promising tandems representing various fields of study have come together:

All participants and their research projects are introduced as part of an official kick-off event. It provides the mentors and mentees with a valuable opportunity to discuss their research projects and priorities in relation to the mentoring programme, thus extending the groundwork for a successful network and for valuable synergies.
The following roles are defined in the university’s “career development model”. These role descriptions were developed in cooperation with the Austrian Commission for Academic Personnel Development. The aim of the career development model was to provide the best possible opportunities for academic staff within the legal framework of the Universities Act.
Additional roles include Wissenschaftliche Angestellte (Junior Research Fellow), also Senior Scientist: The term for these roles is limited to one year in the first instance, with the option to transfer to a permanent role. A completed doctoral qualification or Ph.D. is required. (Exception: temporary positions).
A large number of research staff work as project staff on third-party projects, as well as in traditional academic posts.
The continuing education programme for young researchers aims to develop and broaden teaching and research skills. The first part of the programme helps young researchers to develop basic teaching skills. These skills are essential to the university’s culture of teaching and learning and also enable young researchers to communicate concepts successfully using modern teaching methods. The second part of the programme helps broaden research skills and also deepens young researchers’ teaching skills. Alongside this, participants in the continuing education programme reflect on the researchers’ self-perception, the function of academia and role it has to play in society. For this reason, reflection forms a key component of the training programme. Participants come from a variety of different “academic cultures”, leading to a diverse cohort that exposes them to different approaches and enabling them to interact with “other” areas of academic study/faculty cultures. Participants also have the opportunity to strengthen their links with other members of staff at the university.
The Young Researchers Think Tank is a working group overseen by the Vice-Rector for Research which deals with career progression for young researchers. Young researchers from all faculties at Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt are involved in the think tank’s activities.
The Young Researchers Think Tank aims to develop new ideas, connect young researchers and incorporate their views into the planning of career progression activities. It also organizes special projects such as a conference for young researchers.
Universität Klagenfurt’s doctoral programmes also reflect the university’s internationalization aims. Programme leaders strive to appoint internationally renowned tutors for their flagship programmes and international experts are also expressly desirable to act as external examiners for completed dissertations.
Where reasonable, a mobility grant that facilitates a longer research residency abroad and financial compensation for the sending organizational unit also helps increase mobility amongst young researchers.
