The University of Klagenfurt supports its early career researchers with a range of internal funding opportunities, tailored to the needs of doctoral candidates in particular. In addition, it provides guidance and support with funding opportunities from external partners.

Internal funding opportunities
Support grant
The University of Klagenfurt offers financial support for the completion of academic theses – including doctoral dissertations – which involve above-average financial burdens.
Faculties: all
Eligibility: regular students of the University of Klagenfurt whose dissertations have not yet been completed (evaluated)
Duration: one-time payment
Amount: € 750,- up to € 3.600,-

Merit-Based scholarship
Once a year, the University of Klagenfurt announces a scholarship for academic excellence to recognise academic achievement from students. For doctoral candidates, this means a dissertation completed within the relevant performance period must be assessed as “very good” (equivalent to a distinction or higher).

Eligibility: regular students of the University of Klagenfurt who have used the allocated study time (plus one additional semester as a tolerance semester, if necessary) to complete their dissertation defence

Project funding
The University of Klagenfurt’s Research Council supports – primarily early career – researchers in undertaking independent, small-scale research projects.

Eligibility: primarily doctoral students at the University of Klagenfurt up to the point of their PhD submission (R1) and researchers who have recently completed their PhD (within 2 years of completion) with a continuing employment contract at the University of Klagenfurt (R2). Subject to funding availability, other members of academic staff are also eligible.

Degree completion scholarship
Initiated by the University of Klagenfurt’s Rectorate, the Study Completion Scholarship for Employed Students is designed to support and encourage the swift and timely completion of studies.
Faculties: all
Eligibility: registered students of the University of Klagenfurt who can demonstrate employment during the calendar year 2024, and who have paid their Austrian Students’ Union (ÖH) contribution and tuition fees for the Winter Semester 2024/25 at the University of Klagenfurt. Registered students from non-EU countries are eligible to apply after the standard period of study plus two additional semesters (e.g., for a 6-semester doctoral programme: from the 9th semester onwards).
Duration: one-off payment (multiple applications are possible)
Amount: € 500,- per semester per student

Austrian study grant
All eligibility requirements for receiving the Austrian State Grant for studies can be found on the website of the Austrian Scholarship Foundation (see General Requirements). Please note that additional requirements apply to Doctoral studies: a Doctoral programme must, for example, be started no later than 24 months after completion of the previous degree and before the applicant reaches the age of 33. Students’ Union social fund
Students’ Union members experiencing financial hardship can apply for funding from the social fund. Hardship may be due to unforeseen circumstances such as sudden increases in accommodation costs or expenses related to childcare. Please refer to the fund’s guidelines for full details: Social fund

LiterarMechana: Doctoral completion grant
LiterarMechana offers Doctoral completion grants twice yearly, based on social need, to support early-career researchers in the final stages of their doctoral projects.

Eligibility: doctoral students enrolled at Austrian universities (applications from candidates with EU citizenship or with a centre of life in Austria, and under the age of 35, preferred)

Internal funding opportunities
Young Scientists Mentoring Programme
The University of Klagenfurt’s Research Council is offering funding for year-long mentoring partnerships between early career researchers and internationally-recognised academics from universities (or research institutions) abroad. The programme involves mentees undertaking research visits to the host institution, and their mentors being invited to short-term research visits to the University of Klagenfurt (e.g., to deliver guest lectures).

Eligibility: high-achieving doctoral students (PhD students) or postdoctoral researchers who are fully employed by the University of Klagenfurt, with ongoing employment contracts, and who have established research projects (approximately 2+ years in progress). Projects should have a clear thematic link to the research profile of the mentor and host institution.

The Faculty of Arts, Humanities & Education at the University of Klagenfurt annually awards two doctoral scholarships to students pursuing a doctoral thesis in a subject area represented within the Faculty.

The Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) supports early career researchers to dedicate themselves fully to the completion of their doctoral theses through the DOC scholarship programme.

ÖAW: L’ORÉAL Austria
The Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) supports early-career female scientists to undertake specific projects in fundamental research (Medicine, Natural Sciences, Mathematics), aiding them in launching or restarting their career.
L’ORÉAL Austria [Fellowship for Young Female Researchers in Austria]
Faculties: Medicine, Natural Sciences, Mathematics
Eligibility: female scientists who began their doctoral studies within the last three years or completed them within the last four years. Applicants must be Austrian citizens or have been resident in Austria for at least three years.
Duration: 6 – 12 months

Internet Stiftung: netidee scholarship
The Internet Stiftung supports dissertations that make a significant contribution to the development of the internet in Austria with netidee scholarships. The thesis should address a current topic relating to the Internet and be of academic significance.

BMBWF: CERN Austrian Doctoral Student Programme
This programme enables doctoral students to undertake research in a highly-regarded international environment. CERN provides the infrastructure – including facilities for conducting fundamental research at the highest energies – and on-site support from CERN supervisors.
CERN Austrian Doctoral Student Programme
Faculties: Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science
Eligibility: students interested in pursuing a doctorate or current doctoral students who possess good English or French language skills and wish to receive support from a CERN supervisor in Geneva while working on their dissertation project undertaken at an Austrian university. Applications can be submitted without a specific research topic or named supervisor, however, it is recommended to make contact with potential supervisors beforehand and familiarise yourself with potential research areas (see example topics within the CERN Doctoral Student Programme framework).

Marshall Plan Foundation: The Marshall Plan Scholarship
The Marshall Plan Foundation supports research visits to the USA for students in STEM fields. Both the research topic and the host university can be chosen freely. A selection of potential host universities in the USA can be found on the Foundation’s website (see Host Universities).

Outgoing Research & Networking – Grant for short-term academic outgoing activities by early career researchers (R1) of the University of Klagenfurt
The University of Klagenfurt supports early career researchers (R1 level) with short research and networking activities via the “Outgoing Research & Networking” programme. This includes participation in seminars, workshops, conferences, and summer/winter schools, with a preference for events held at universities abroad, or short-term research activities in archives, libraries, laboratories, or similar institutions.

External funding opportunities
ERASMUS+ short-term mobility for doctoral students
ERASMUS+ enables doctoral researchers to undertake short study visits to a university abroad in Europe. The number of places available at the University of Klagenfurt varies by subject and is based on bilateral agreements with over 250 universities in more than 50 partner countries. Furthermore, short-term mobility can also be carried out within the framework of a Blended Intensive Programme (BIP). BIPs are short, intensive programmes that employ innovative learning and teaching methods and combine a virtual component with a physical short-term stay. Faculties: A prerequisite is an active ERASMUS+ agreement in the relevant field, which also covers doctoral studies.
Eligibility: doctoral students of the University of Klagenfurt
Duration: 5 – 30 days, supplemented by a virtual component (this may not be required for doctoral students)
Amount: The grant can be applied to the physical duration (5 – 30 days) of the mobility activity.

Duration: 2 – 12 months. An Erasmus+ study period can be completed in a ‘blended’ format (combining physical stays with virtual activities).
Amount: ERASMUS+ students are exempt from tuition fees at both the host and home universities and receive a grant to cover travel and increased living costs abroad.

Fulbright Schuman Program
The Fulbright Schuman Program offers research stays in the USA for doctoral candidates and post-doctoral researchers from all disciplines. The program supports projects thematically related to Europe, the European Union, or transatlantic relations.
Fulbright Schuman Program for EU citizens: Doctoral Research

Eligibility: early career researchers who are EU citizens, hold at least a Bachelor’s degree, and whose proposed project is relevant to US-EU relations or EU agendas and benefits at least two EU member states; strong English language skills; experience studying or working abroad desirable
Duration: 3 – 9 months
Amount: up to € 3.000,- per month

BMBWF/OeAD: Marietta Blau-Grant
The Marietta Blau programme supports the completion of part of a doctoral study undertaken in Austria, with a period of study abroad.

Duration: 6 – 12 months

ÖAW: GO.INVESTIGATIO
The Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) supports library, archival, and fieldwork stays outside of Austria via the GO.INVESTIGATIO travel grants. These grants are intended to be essential for the completion of a scientific thesis/publication, or for the development of a research proposal.

The Marshall Plan Foundation offers Austrian doctoral students research stays at the Institute of European Studies, University of California, Berkeley. Applications are welcomed from candidates with projects focusing on economic and social science questions.

Settlement of travel expenses for external examiners in the context of the oral defence
Upon request, (partial) reimbursement of travel and accommodation costs is available for external examiners and assessors who travel to the University of Klagenfurt to participate in doctoral thesis defences.

Supporting visiting researchers
The University of Klagenfurt promotes networking between its researchers and scientists abroad. As part of the Research Council initiative, visits by established scientists – and in exceptional cases (e.g., based on outstanding scientific achievement) also by doctoral candidates – to the University of Klagenfurt are facilitated.

BMBWF/OeAD: S&T - Scientific and Technological Cooperation
The Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) and the corresponding ministry in one of the partner countries offer subsidies for travel costs within the framework of bilateral research projects. These collaborative projects require the participation of researchers – and particularly early career researchers – from Austria and a partner country.

OeAD: Franz Werfel Scholarship
The Agency for Education and Internationalisation’s (OeAD) excellence programme supports research and teaching in the field of Austrian literature. This initiative strengthens the development of an international network of dedicated germanists. Through follow-up support, Werfel scholarship recipients remain part of this network (e.g., through annual invitations to the Werfel Conference, publication grants, and post-doctoral fellowship opportunities).

Eligibility: early career researchers, preferably with teaching experience and a university position, at the beginning of their academic career (postdoctoral researchers; doctoral/PhD students from higher education systems that do not offer habilitation), who have not lived/worked in Austria for the six months prior to the scholarship application, are not permanently resident in Austria, or have not primarily completed their academic education in Austria

The Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) supports international collaboration between early career researchers from abroad and researchers in Austria through the JESH Programme. It funds research stays in Austria for early career researchers from a total of 61 countries, as well as stays abroad for Austrian researchers.

Internet Stiftung/FWF: netidee SCIENCE
The Austrian Science Fund (FWF) is offering funding through the netidee SCIENCE programme to support research into the opportunities and challenges presented by the internet, focusing on its technical, economic, social, and political aspects. Projects are welcome in areas such as: Fundamental internet technologies – The Internet of Things (IoT) – Information security and data protection – Communication systems – Social networks – New digital communication formats

Eligibility: postdoctoral researchers who completed their doctoral studies within the last five years, are affiliated with an Austrian research institution and supported by a mentor during the project
Duration: Aligned with either the FWF ESPRIT programme (max. 36 months) or FWF Principal Investigator Projects (max. 48 months)
Amount: at the same level as FWF ESPRIT or FWF Principal Investigator Projects

OeAD/BMBWF: S&T - Scientific & Technological Cooperation
The Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) and the corresponding ministry in one of the partner countries offer subsidies for travel costs within the framework of bilateral research projects. These collaborative projects require the participation of researchers – and particularly early career researchers – from Austria and a partner country.
