What connects oyster mushrooms from Maria Rain and organic eggs from Gnesau?

Even though avocados and chia seeds are currently en vogue: If you really want to live a healthy and ecologically sustainable life, try to eat food that is regional and seasonal. The farms in and around Klagenfurt, but also in neighbouring Italy and Slovenia, offer delicious food all year round.

Derbiobote.at or bio-bringts.at: Delivering goodness to your door
You don’t even have to travel far to find good, organically produced food from the region; the products can be delivered straight to your home. Both www.derbiobote.at and www.bio-bringts.at allow you to order pre-assembled boxes, or you can compile your very own customised box including precisely what you need. Deliveries are made on a weekly basis. The range of goods offered by the two delivery services differs slightly: While Biobote supplies the traditional Käsnudeln and rice, Bio-bringt’s offers oyster mushrooms and camelina oil. Both delivery companies specify on their website which farms they source their produce from. And as an extra goodie for those who lack creativity in the kitchen, there are recipes to go with the products.

Klagenfurt’s organic market
If you feel like chatting with the farmers themselves, you can do so at the weekly organic market in Klagenfurt. Market day is every Friday (7 am to 1 pm) in Klagenfurt’s Lidmanskygasse. Although the markets on Thursdays and Saturdays offer many organic products as well, the markets on Fridays offer organic products exclusively. The products offered include milk, bread, cereal products, sausage, cheese, meat, eggs, vegetables and fruit. A leisurely stroll through the market is definitely worthwhile!

Farm shops: See where it comes from
Many farms in the region sell their produce directly from the farm. For instance, you can buy different kinds of organic potatoes all year round from the Jäger family in Prosintschach (beautiful location for a cycling trip, by the way!) (biohof-erdaepfel-jaeger [at] aon [dot] at) and you can get dairy products, apple juice and honey from the Lautemann family in Stallhofen (www.lautemann.at). The farm shop at the Adamhof in Maria Saal offers dairy products, juices, herbs and cereal products as well as meat products. The farm shop is open on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (www.hofladenadamhof.at).
