Ice, Ice Baby

When summer reaches peak temperatures, we all need to cool down. Now for a scoop of ice cream! But where? We visited the top ice cream parlours in Klagenfurt and have put together an overview of the different options for you.

Tutti Frutti: For true gourmets

This small ice cream shop in the heart of Klagenfurt often draws long queues. The intense flavours of its ice cream varieties have made the salon famous and it is the undisputed number one according to ice cream gourmets. Host Nico always has an encouraging word for his guests and addresses them by name. The ambience and quality have convinced faithful visitors for many years and make Tutti Frutti a real hot spot on hot summer days. If you want to take a portion of Italy home with you, you can also get an ice cream box to go.

Morle: For a quick stop-off before heading to the lake

Anyone who has ever cycled or inline skated towards the lake from Lendhafen will have noticed the small ice cream parlour at Steinerne Brücke. Service is very important here. The small family business first opened its ice cream counter in 1975. A lot has happened since then, but certain things have remained unchanged. Then as now, walkers and cyclists stop at the charming ice cream parlour on the corner of the Steinerne Brücke to take a refreshing break. If you’re lucky, you’ll find a place on the “Eisbankerl” (ice-cream bench) and can make yourself comfortable with your ice cream. If you prefer, the ice cream scoop can be covered with a delicate chocolate sauce, which has made the ice cream parlour famous.

Arcobaleno: For real Italian taste

The Gelateria is conveniently located, directly opposite the City Arkaden, Klagenfurt’s shopping centre at the heart of the capital, and offers original Italian gelato. But not only the ingredients of the ice cream varieties come directly from Italy, the staff also come from the beautiful neighbouring country and know exactly what is important in ice cream production. The ice cream shop has been around for more than 20 years and attracts thousands of visitors every year with its ice cream specialities, ice cream sundaes and the delicious café. As soon as you enter the Gelateria, you feel like you’re on holiday: children stand in front of the large ice cream counter staring longingly at the different flavours while a long queue forms in front of the cash desk. Here you order just like in Italy: pay first, then choose your ice cream after presenting the receipt.

Eis Greissler: For adventurers

Those who find the classic ice cream varieties too boring may be fascinated by the unusual compositions offered by the Greissler’s ice cream team. Goat’s cheese, poppy seed, semolina or pumpkin seed oil: this charming ice cream parlour is not lacking in unusual offers. The selection is not only quirky, many varieties are also vegan. So if you’re tired of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, try elderberry or Alpine caramel. The quality shows: The fruit ice cream really tastes like fruit – and it’s organic too!

Star feature: Many unusual, novel varieties

Pazzo: For a little scoop in-between

And of course the ice cream on campus is a must. Café Pazzo has always had a small but fine selection of ice cream and thus guarantees all students a holiday feeling for in-between times, even during exam preparations. So, if you’re studying, writing seminar papers or final theses in the summer and taking a break from studying, you can pick up a scoop or two from a variety of tasty ice creams – it’s worth it!

Uniwirt: Soft-ice machine

Many know it as a retro memory from childhood days: the machine ice cream, also known as soft ice cream. Uniwirt, located directly next to the Pazzo (see above), offers sweet refreshment from their outdoor ice cream machine and has a choice of toppings. So, if you still want sugar sprinkles or Smarties on the ice cream, the choice is yours. Two varieties are available every day, which can also be ordered in a mixed version. The portion is huge – and so is the pleasure!

Ice cream by the lake: In the East Bay of Lake Wörthersee

Needless to say, you really shouldn’t miss out on savouring a delicious ice cream while strolling along the shores of Lake Wörthersee, before taking a dip in the cool water, or after a long summer’s day at the beach. The East Bay provides many opportunities to cool off in style. Villa Lido Gelateria is part of the Restaurant Villa Lido. You will find a variety of homemade (fruit) ice cream flavours here, which you can enjoy while admiring the beautiful view of the lake. At Sunset Klagenfurt, very close to the lido, you can order tasty ice cream creations to enjoy on the spot or to take away. Eis Paradies is located directly in front of the entrance to the lido and offers many unusual ice cream varieties, including Kinder Penguin, Bounty, Toffifee, Oreo, Raffaello or Orange Cheesecake.
