Efficient and intelligent: Drones get to grips with planning the delivery of goods

When goods are needed urgently, for instance, in rural areas poorly served by transport infrastructure, or in large, heavily congested cities, they could be delivered by drones. In 2013, Amazon was one of the first to declare the intention to work towards the automated delivery of goods by small autonomous helicopters. A multi-disciplinary research team at the Alpen-Adria-Universität assembled by Christian Bettstetter and Friederike Wall is due to deliver initial insights on the efficient operation of (self-organised) delivery of goods. Doctoral student Pasquale Grippa will present the results at the conference “Robotics: Science and Systems”, which is scheduled to take place at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from July 12th.

Efficient time synchronization of sensor networks by means of time series analysis

Wireless sensor networks have many applications, ranging from industrial process automation to environmental monitoring. Researchers at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt have recently developed a time synchronization technique and have carried out experimental performance testing. The method developed learns the behavior of the sensor clocks, making it particularly efficient in terms of energy and computational resources.

Environment in transition: “We have to learn to tolerate uncertainties.”

Geographer Kirsten von Elverfeldt argues the case for giving greater consideration to uncertainties in the scientific approach to the environment and its transition. She has taken a close look at natural phenomena featuring the concept of so-called self-organising systems, where the long-term development is difficult or even impossible to predict. In an interview with ad astra she explains what defines these systems and why tolerating uncertainties can be worthwhile.
