The 22nd Century Center (22CC) is a visionary new building at the heart of the University of Klagenfurt campus, designed to bring together teaching, research and service provision on a sustainable basis. Construction of the new building is a key element in the strategic development of the campus and serves to further strengthen the profile of the University of Klagenfurt as an internationally renowned centre of academic and professional excellence.
The design by the internationally renowned architectural firm Snøhetta makes a striking architectural statement and will mark the future entrance to the campus. Open, interactive spatial structures promote exchange, collaboration and new forms of learning and research.
The 22CC responds specifically to the requirements of a modern university: forms of use that were previously distributed across several locations will be brought together, shortening journey times and creating synergies. Around 13,500 students and staff will benefit from contemporary teaching, learning and working conditions.
As a result, the 22CC will not only improve the functional quality of the campus, but also its social dimension as a place for coming together, exchanging ideas and collaborative work.
Sustainability is a core guiding principle of the project. The compact design, timber construction, photovoltaic systems and green roofs contribute to responsible campus development. At the same time, additional green spaces and recreational areas will be created, further enhancing the quality of life on campus.
In its capacity as the developer, the Federal Real Estate Company (Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft) bears responsibility for the implementation of the project and attaches particular importance to architectural quality, functionality and long-term usability in the interests of creating forward-looking university infrastructure.
The 22CC represents a major milestone in the development of the University of Klagenfurt. It reinforces the campus concept, increases the University’s international visibility and provides an important boost for Carinthia as a centre of education and research – particularly in conjunction with the Koralmbahn railway line.
This new building will create more space for science, for new ideas and for around 13,500 students who will use their knowledge to help shape our society. […]
Eva-Maria Holzleitner, Federal Minister for Women, Science and Research
This new building will provide space for excellent research, innovative teaching and a vibrant international campus culture. […]
Ada Pellert, Rector of the University of Klagenfurt
22CC represents an investment in bright minds, modern infrastructure and an internationally visible university.
Peter Kaiser, State Governor
The new building will provide the campus with state-of-the-art facilities for scientific research and, at the same time, a distinctive landmark designed by the international architectural firm Snøhetta.
Christine Dornaus, Managing Director of the Federal Real Estate Company (BIG)
The 22CC will transform the University of Klagenfurt into a campus university without space constraints and represents a significant improvement on the initial proposal. Construction will only take place in the south-east corner of the grounds and on existing paved parking spaces. We will monitor the implementation of greening, soil unsealing and the use of sustainable materials.
