The Role of Science in Sustainability Transitions: Lessons from Transdisciplinary Socioecological Research on a Greek Island
Short Abstract of PhD
This study builds upon a transdisciplinary effort to transform the Greek island of Samothraki into a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Analytically, it contributes to social ecology and island studies, by exploring the factors that cause island societies to prosper and sustain themselves and those that lead to demographic collapse. Moreover, taking into account the conceptual understanding of the problem, the visions of the people and the local and institutional constraints and opportunities, it aims to reflect on science’s intervention potential for a sustainability transition.
