Title of PhD
Impact of the ERP (European Recovery Program) on the paper – forestry – complex in Austria 1948-1970
Short Abstract of PhD
In my PhD thesis I want to research the impact of the European Recovery Program (ERP) on the Paper-Forestry-Complex in Austria. Besides the financial exchange the European Recovery Program included extensive (technical) knowledge exchange (e.g. Austrian scholars travelling to the U.S., exchange of technical expertise). Both the pulp and paper, and the forest industry underwent important changes in the decades following the WWII. An example for these changes in the forest industry was the introduction of new machinery for improving the road network into Austrian forests. The pulp and paper sector was an important part of Austria’s post-war economy. The pulp and paper industry was highly dependent on natural resources. But it did not only depend on them, but was also shaping natural resources by demanding large amounts of wood and also new breeds of trees and new forestry technics. In my thesis I want to explore the extent of this dependence and mutual shaping process and the role of the ERP in this.
