Inconvenient Histories: Illuminating and Rethinking Jewish Narratives in Southern Transylvania

This lecture discusses the nearly forgotten German-speaking Jewish communities of the Transylvanian Saxon towns, with a focus on Mediaș. In addition to outlining the community’s unique historical characteristics, I will look at Jewish war-time narratives that deviate from the expected or majority narrative and discuss methods used to “reactivate” Jewish memory and illuminate Jewish heritage in the context of the Horizon 2020 TRACES project.
