Visiting PhD students
The University of Klagenfurt welcomes visiting PhD students from many countries. The Visiting PhD Programme is a non-degree seeking programme for visiting doctoral students who want to complete a research placement at the University of Klagenfurt.
As a visiting PhD student, you are admitted to the university and can work on your research at AAU for up to a year. You can take advantage of AAU’s course offering (lectures, seminars, workshops, etc.) and services such as libraries. However, as a visiting PhD student, you cannot obtain a degree from the University of Klagenfurt. Please be aware that AAU does not provide any scholarships or funding for this research stay.
How do I apply for Visiting PhD status?
To be admitted to Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt as a visiting PhD student, you must have a letter of support from a supervisor with an active connection to AAU. It is your responsibility to contact potential supervisors and agree a collaboration during your research placement at Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt.
The letter of support is the formal procedure for admission to Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt. It is therefore important that your prospective supervisor at Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt confirms their willingness to supervise you by sending an email to the Doc.Service. We also require confirmation from your home university that you are an active doctoral student at that university. Please get in touch with the Doc.Service for further information on your next steps.
After your arrival in Klagenfurt, visit the Doc.Service as soon as possible to complete the other admission formalities and pick up your student ID. To avoid delays, please note that a student union fee of EUR 19.20 per semester is also due. This fee must be paid by all students at universities in Austria.
