Silent Reading Room

We are opening our SILENT READING ROOM on level 3 (central wing, east side) for concentrated studying and working in the library.

As a deliberate counterpoint to the non-rest area on level 2, we have opted for an open-plan but enclosed room-within-a-room solution that offers you a silent environment for focused study, research and writing in separate individual cubicles. In addition, unlike the quiet areas in the cube, there is no distracting background noise in the SILENT READING ROOM caused by training courses, conversations at the information desk or the automatic doors.

We look forward to your visit to our new SILENT READING ROOM!

Construction of a silent reading room

We are noisily rebuilding now so that it will be silent later!

A silent reading room is being built on the east side of the central wing on level 3 of the University Library.

We will have to close the area following the Karl Popper Archive from 22nd November for the construction work. In addition, increased noise disturbance is to be expected in the entire reading room on level 3.

However, the quiet reading rooms in the cube on levels 2 & 3 will be available as usual and will remain completely unaffected by the renovation work.

Our library services will remain unaffected! Our bookshelves on level 3 will remain freely accessible during the construction work.

We kindly ask you for your understanding and apologise for any inconvenience caused by the construction work!

We look forward to the opening of the new silent reading room in the new year!

New chairs in the reading rooms

Our new chairs have arrived – please take a seat!

We proudly present the result of the chair casting (spring 2024): As of today, the new chairs can be used in the reading rooms of the UBK.

We would like to thank you once again for your participation in the chair casting and wish you a relaxed and comfortable learning & working experience on the new chairs!

Exhibition: Code Name ‘Mary’

Visit the exhibition Code Name ‘Mary’. The extraordinary life of Muriel Gardiner in the University Library’s non-rest area on level 2.

The exhibition provides insights into the life and work of the American refugee Muriel Gardiner, who campaigned against National Socialism in the 1930s and worked closely with the ‘Revolutionary Socialists’, including Joseph Buttinger.

In addition to visiting the exhibition, which is free at any time during the opening hours of the University Library, we cordially invite you to take part in the curator’s guided tour with Markus Stumpf (held in German) on 21 October at 5.00 pm.

Admission to the exhibition and the curator’s tour is free of charge and no advance booking is required!

We are looking forward to your visit!
